Designing a GUI Description Language with Topic Maps

Article, was published by Lukas Georgieff at 2010-09-30

This paper presents the concepts of a description language to be created to design a graphical user interface (GUI) for specific ontologies defined in Topic Maps.

Topic Maps™ is a powerful standard family to describe real word scenarios in computer processable data structures. On one hand it is so generic that arbitrary ontologies can be defined on the other hand this limitless concept brings up some problems when visualising this information to users who are not familiar with Topic Maps. To make TM databases applicable for end users it is necessary to solve the visualising problems of such a generic concept without enforcing limitations to it. This paper presents the concepts of a description language to be created to design a graphical user interface (GUI) for specific ontologies defined in Topic Maps.

Nowadays Topic Maps appears to be very suitable for being applied in Libraries, Archives and Museums. It provides a suitable model and mechanisms for depth indexing, classification and the implementation of FRBR, CIDOC-CRM or other conceptualizations.
